Bleach… On Your Face? Let’s Talk about Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl)

We know, “hypochlorous acid” doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue. But don’t let the chemistry-class name fool you. This naturally occurring compound might just be the multitasking superhero your skincare routine (and your first-aid kit) has been missing.

At Biocoslab, we’re excited to be behind the scenes of something simple, powerful, and surprisingly gentle: Hypochlorous acid spray. Let’s break it down.

So… What Is Hypochlorous Acid?

Hypochlorous acid is a weak acid made from hydrogen, oxygen, and chlorine. Our body makes hypochlorous acid (HOCl) when we get hurt or sick. It’s part of how our immune system fights germs. It breaks down the outer layer of bacteria and viruses to help get rid of them. It’s gentle enough to use on skin, but strong enough to break down bacteria and viruses.

Even cooler? It’s been used for a long time as a disinfectant and is said to be 100 times better than bleach at killing bacteria. Recently, it has become popular as a skin care product, used to calm skin and kill bacteria that can cause acne flares.

But Wait… Isn’t Hypochlorous Acid and Bleach the Same?

Let’s clear that up real quick. Bleach and hypochlorous acid do share similar basic ingredients (hydrogen, oxygen, and chlorine). But that’s where the similarities end. Bleach is a base — strong, irritating, and definitely not skin-friendly.

Hypochlorous acid is a weak acid that your body naturally makes, and it’s gentle enough to spray on your face. No sting, no burn, just results.

HOCl Not Just for Cleaning Surfaces Anymore!

Yes, hypochlorous acid has been used for years in hospitals to disinfect wounds and even surgical rooms. But now, it’s having a serious glow-up in the world of wellness and skincare. From acne to eczema to post-gym face sprays, people are finding all kinds of reasons to keep a bottle handy. Here’s how people are using hypochlorous acid spray in everyday life:

Breakouts?
It helps calm acne-causing bacteria without drying your skin out.

Cuts or scrapes?
Spray it on to help reduce infection and promote healing.

Red, itchy skin?
Great for calming inflammation, especially for things like eczema or dermatitis.

Post-workout refresh?
Use it as a skin-safe way to keep sweat-related breakouts in check.

Maskne Relief?
Yep, it even works to reduces bacterial buildup and irritation from prolonged mask use.

And the best part: No stinging. No harsh chemicals. Just clean, simple care.

What Not to Pair with Hypochlorous Acid?

Most people can use hypochlorous acid with zero issues, even those with sensitive skin. In fact, studies have shown it works just as well as benzoyl peroxide (a popular acne treatment), but without the dryness and irritation.

While HOCl is gentle and versatile, it’s best used on its own. Mixing it with certain skincare ingredients can reduce its effectiveness or irritate your skin:

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)

• Both are antioxidants, but they can cancel each other out when layered directly.

Strong Acids (AHAs, BHAs, PHAs)

• May destabilize HOCl and increase skin sensitivity.

Retinoids (Retinol, Tretinoin, Retinaldehyde)

• Layering may cause irritation. It is best to use HOCl in the morning and retinoids at night.

Benzoyl Peroxide

• Since HOCl already has antibacterial power, combining with benzoyl peroxide may be unnecessarily harsh.

Alcohol-Based

• Can dry out the skin barrier when used together with HOCl.

Best practice: Use HOCl spray right after cleansing as your first step, then follow with moisturizer or sunscreen.
